Third International Fair Trade Towns Newsletter - December 2011

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

2011 has been a great year for the international Fair Trade Towns movement that saw the celebration of 1,000 Fair Trade Towns worldwide, Differdange as the first Fair Trade Town in Luxembourg, New Koforidua as the first Fair Trade Town in Ghana and Africa, Kumamoto as the first Fair Trade Town in Japan and Asia and Litomerice and Vsetin as the first Fair Trade Towns in the Czech Republic. As the year draws to an end there are now 1,074 Fair Trade Towns in 23 countries that lie across all six major continents with Poland and Hungary expected to start their own Fair Trade Town initiatives in 2012.

Next year will be the UN international year of cooperatives and as producer cooperatives lie at the heart of Fairtrade, 2012 should proove to be another good year that will see Fair Trade Towns go from strength to strength.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy and successful New Year!

1. Beyond 1,000 Fair Trade Towns – 5th International Fair Trade Towns conference in Malmö, Sweden.
The 5th annual Fair Trade Towns conference was held in the beautiful city of Malmö, which 5 years earlier became the first Fairtrade City in Sweden. The conference also took place in the same week Garstang in the UK celebrated 10 years since being awarded its world’s first Fair Trade Town status by the Fairtrade Foundation.

Over 200 delegates from 23 countries explored the way forward now that we have moved beyond 1,000 Fair Trade Towns. Joyce and Ebenezer from Kenya and Ghana respectively, provided the essential voice of the producers, which served to remind us why the Fair Trade Towns movement was founded and continues to exist today.

Developing direct links between Fair Trade Towns in the North and producers in the South was a topic that attracted much support and interest during the conference. Walter Alifo from Ghana spoke about how New Koforidua became the first Fair Trade Town in Africa, following ten years of promoting Fairtrade alongside their friends in Garstang, the world’s first Fair Trade Town (see below).

The conference also saw the international Fair Trade Towns movement unite behind a joint statement calling for trade justice that will be presented to the European Parliament and the Rio +20 UN conference in 2012.

On behalf of Fair Trade Towns everywhere I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the hosts of the conference from Fairtrade Sweden and the City of Malmö and especially the Deputy Mayor of Malmö, Lari Pitka-Kangas for his warm and compassionate participation throughout the conference.

All reports and presentations from the conference are available here and video can be viewed here.

2. Fair Trade Towns in the South
In December 2008 coffee producers in Alfenas came together to declare themselves as the first Fair Trade Town in Brazil. The following year farmers in Perez Zeledon, Costa Rica declared their town a Fair Trade Town and as part of the 1,000 Fair Trade Towns celebrations in June this year the people of New Koforidua, Ghana declared themselves the first Fair Trade Town in Africa. In each case the five goals used by Fair Trade Towns in the North to promote the sale of fair trade products were adapted to promote fair trade in a predominantly producer community.

Although these declarations in the South present many difficult challenges ahead, all agree that we should embrace and welcome them into the international Fair Trade Towns family. The first task is to develop flexible guidelines based on the five goals that will enable Fair Trade Town campaigns to set up in any country across the globe. There are already moves to start up a national Fair Trade Towns campaign in Brazil where the FAIRTRADE Mark will soon be launched.

3. An East-West-South-North partnership to promote fair trade and the Millennium Development Goals
In 2011 the Agenda 21 office in Hanover initiated the project “Aware & Fair’ – city games and campaigns as a local reaction to the Millennium Development Goals”. This formed part of an EU program to raise awareness on international development policy linked to the MDG’s through specific action such as Fair Trade.

Hanover’s partners included their twin towns of Poznan (Poland) and Blantyre (Malawi) as well as Litomerice (Czech Republic) and Miskolc (Hungary) which had been involved in the international city network ICLEI for sustainable development for many years.

One of the aims of this 2 year project is to establish and expand the fair trade market in all the cities, in particular for products from Malawi e.g. nuts, tea, rice. This gained the support of Fairtrade Germany and the Polish Fair Trade Association as important cooperation partners.

The promotion of fair trade within the project has already helped contribute to the following achievements:
• Litomerice becoming one of the first Fair Trade Towns in the Czech Republic earlier this year.
• The opening of the first Fair Trade shop in Poland on 6th December.
• The launch of the Fair Trade Town campaign in Poznan expected to become the first Fair Trade Town in Poland in November 2012.
• The future launch of Fair Trade Towns in Hungary with Miskolc expected to become their first Fair Trade Town.
• During the project seminar in Blantyre in October the Fair Trade Towns concept was presented to representatives from the Local Authority and FLO certified small growers associations who showed a strong interest in developing a Fair Trade Town campaign in Blantyre.

4. The world’s first International Fair Trade Visitor Centre opens in Garstang, UK
On Monday 21st November, almost ten years to the day since Garstang was awarded its status as the world’s fir Fair Trade Town, The FIG Tree opened in Garstang as the world’s first international Fair Trade visitor Centre. The FIG Tree will celebrate Garstang’s unique achievement and the international Fair Trade Towns movement by providing:

• A Fair Trade Exhibition - exploring the four interrelated themes; Fair Trade, The British Atlantic Slave Trade and its abolition, Quaker Heritage in North West England where Quakers were founded and Chocolate.

• A Fair Trade Café and Gift Shop - providing a community hub for both residents and visitors to Garstang using our triangular link with New Koforidua, the first Fair Trade Town in Africa and Media, PA, America’s first Fair Trade Town.

• Chocolate Making Events - using cocoa from New Koforidua and live video links.

• Fair Trade Way - Fairtrade refreshments, souvenirs and information for ramblers at the start of the Fair Trade Way; the world’s first long-distance fair trade heritage trail that links Fairtrade Towns between Garstang and Keswick.

3. Cross-border Fairtrade Towns

In January 2010 Hadrian’s Wall along the English – Scottish border became the first cross-border Fairtrade Zone with nine local authorities (including one in Scotland) declaring their support for Fairtrade. But it won’t be the last!

Since 2005 there has been a grassroots movement of people along the German, French and Luxembourg borders that have been working together to share common interests. When Saarbrücken became the first Fairtrade Town in Germany in 2009 they decided to direct their cooperation towards becoming a transnational Fairtrade Region. They hope to gain Fairtrade Region status in 2012 and there are presently two models being considered:

1.) Quattro Pole – A trinational network of four cities: Luxemburg, Metz, Saarbrücken and Trier.
Saarbrücken and Trier in Germany have already achieved Fairtrade Town status while Metz in France and Luxemburg are striving towards it. Once this is achieved they hope to get the Quattro Pole to sign an official common Charta.

2.) Euro district – A binational network between the Borough of Saarbrücken and the Northern Department of Moselle.
In December 2010 the Meirs Assembly took a unanimous deliberation for the Euro district to commit itself to Fairtrade. Since then a few local authorities on both sides, French and German are striving to meet the five goals.

4. Fair Trade Towns in Central Eastern Europe

September will see the declaration of the first Fair Trade Town in Central Eastern Europe when Litomerice will be nominated as the first Fair Trade Town in the Czech Republic with Vestin soon to follow.

Gdansk and Poznan in Poland are also running Fair Trade Town campaigns and Poznan hopes to gain status in 2012. The campaign in Hungary is still in the early stages but Miskolc is currently running a campaign. This is another example of cross-border collaboration as Germany’s Fairtrade City of Hannover is an EU project partner with Litomerice, Poznan and Miskolc. We wish them all every success!

Kumumoto celebrates becoming Japan's first Fair Trade Town

On Saturday 4 June 2011 joint declarations in the following twelve towns and cities saw the number of Fair Trade Towns worldwide top 1000!

1. Whitehorse City, Australia
2. Kumamoto, Japan
3. Madrid, Spain
4. Kontich, Belgium
5. Bilzen, Belgium
6. Herne, Germany
7. Delft, the Netherlands
8. Witney, England
9. Rutherglen, Scotland
10. Cambuslang, Scotland
11. Aberaeron, Wales

Spain’s capital city Madrid joined the UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s constituency Witney, and Kumamoto in Japan, which declared as the first Fair Trade Town in Asia.  The event celebrated the growing people’s movement, now present in 22 countries across six continents campaigning for fair trade in the fields, on the high streets, in local schools, community groups and businesses.

Watch just a few of the highlights from the day here

International Fairtrade Cities now include; London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Brussels, Copenhagen, Oslo, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Vancouver and Wellington in New Zealand.

To mark the 1000th Fair Trade Town, almost 500 individuals, organisations and Fair Trade Towns from 31 countries signed up to a statement calling on G20  leaders to ‘Make Trade Fair’. The statement calls for action to ensure “the current food system and agricultural trade flows contribute to, rather than hinder, sustainable agriculture and food security, in the South and in the North.” Fair Trade Towns around the world echoed the demand through local photo messages. The statement, supporting messages and photographs were sent to Mr Ciolos, EU Commissioner for Agriculture (and his resoponse: European Commission response to Make Trade Fair petition - ), Mr Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General and Agricultural Ministers ahead of the G20 meeting held in Paris on 22 – 23 June.

Congratulating the Fair Trade Towns movement on reaching the 1,000 milestone, EU leaders spoke out for Fair Trade. Mr Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, said:

buzek_fair_trade_-_9_march_2011__copyright

“Let me (…) congratulate you on the Fair Trade Towns campaign with almost 1000 Fair Trade Towns worldwide involved, the majority being in the EU. This is a perfect example of good cooperation between local authorities, NGOs, volunteers and consumers, all in support of Fair Trade (…) Fair Trade is not about charity: it is about making trade work for development, in particular marginalized producers and workers in the South”.

To read the full letter from Mr Jerzy Buzek, and other letters of support from the President of the Committee of the Regions, Ms Mercedes Bresso, and from the President of the European Economic and Social Committee, Mr Staffan Nilsson click here.

But the campaign to Make Trade Fair doesn’t stop with 1,000 Towns. Save the date and get ready to join participants at the 5th International Fair Trade Towns Conference in Malmo on 18– 20 November 2011 to explore how we move forward “Beyond 1,000 Fair Trade Towns”.

First International Fair Trade Towns Newsletter - April 2011

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

It is with great sorrow that in this first international Fair Trade Towns newsletter I have to report on the shocking devastation and loss of life due to the recent earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand. The newly formed Fair Trade Towns Forum in Japan was to hold its first assembly on March 20th, but that was before the earth quake and subsequent Tsunami hit the East coast of Japan nine days earlier. The City Congress of Kumamoto in Japan adopted a resolution in support of Fair Trade last December and Auckland in New Zealand is also running a strong Fair Trade City campaign. It was hoped that Kumamoto would be able to declare as the first Fair Trade Town in Asia along with Auckland as part of the 1,000 Fair Trade Towns celebrations. I know that Fair Trade Towns everywhere will join me in wishing our friends and colleagues in Japan and New Zealand well. They are in our hearts and minds at this very difficult time.

Will the UK break the Cotton Bunting world record using Fairtrade cotton?

During Fairtrade Fortnight supporters throughout the UK were decorating Fairtrade cotton bunting in an attempt to break the world record for bunting that presently stands at 2,696m. With equivalent to 40 miles of bunting sent out and sacks returning at a rate of 3/day things are looking good and the final total will be revealed on World Fair Trade Day.

The world record breaking attempt wasn’t just fun and games however, but accompanied the Great Cotton Stitch Up report that details the $47bn wall of EU/US/Chinese subsidies that lock West African cotton farmers in to poverty. The opportunity was taken to ask Caroline Spelman (UK Agriculture Minister) and Members of the European Parliament to make sure cotton is included in negotiations on a post 2013 Common Agricultural Policy

See how school children in Ghana supported the cotton bunting campaign here.

The world is facing a food crisis. Demand for food outstripping supply - global food production will have to rise 70 percent by 2050 as the world population expands to 9.1 billion from about 6.8 billion in 2010, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The threats of climate change, food speculation and rising inequality are all amplifying the impact of this on the poor.

According to a United Nations (UN) study, half the people in the world suffering from hunger in 2005 were smallholder farmers. They are often net buyers of food and so are the first to suffer from high food prices, but are rarely able to capture the benefits when selling their products. They are at the wrong end of both chains.

The race to the bottom triggered by the current food system has also had negative effects on producers and workers who are fighting to make a decent living and implement sustainable economic, environmental and social practices.

Large producer countries, such as the European Union and the United States, heavily subsidise their own agricultural sector while putting in place barriers for imported agricultural products. This has a negative effect on the possibility for producers disadvantaged by conventional trade (both in the North and South) to trade their way out of poverty.

The rising awareness of the food crisis means that agriculture is back on the agenda for the global community.

As the agricultural ministers of the G20 meet in France, proposals on global food security and commodities will be at the centre of the debate and we need to keep a clear focus on the need to reform the whole food system. There is a battle on to ensure that the response to the food crisis is based on fairness and justice and not just on producing more and cheaper food.

In addition, the ever increasing pressure to conclude the World Trade Organisation´s Doha Development Round, in a way that truly benefits the poor, and the European Union plans to revise its post-2013 Common Agricultural Policy, provide for a window of opportunity to address the problems.

There is no divide between Southern and Northern farmers. The real issue at stake is whether and how G-20 leaders will ensure that current food system and agricultural trade flows contribute to, rather than hinder, sustainable agriculture and food security, in the South and in the North. The right to food of the world´s population is at stake.

With the joint declarations on 4th June including New Koforidua (Ghana), there will be 1000 towns across the globe that have obtained the status of Fair Trade Town showing their commitment to Fair Trade and benefiting directly more than 6 million people in 58 countries.

Fair Trade Towns bring local government, businesses, community organisations and individuals together under the shared vision of fairer, more sustainable trade

By buying Fairtrade certified products and from Fair Trade Organizations, consumers are also showing that there is another way of doing trade.

On 22- 23 June 2011, the agricultural ministers of the G-20 countries will meet in France to try to find a global solution to these global challenges.
G-20 leaders should not turn a deaf ear to this loud and clear message from the 1000 Fair Trade Towns and the Fair Trade movement.

A big thank you to all 1,000 Fairtrade towns for supporting our producers across Africa! However, a lot of work still needs to be done and we hope that politicians across the globe perceive African small-scale producers as part of the solution to the current food crisis. We urgently need a fairer system which not only will support producers in African and other developing countries but will also help secure food access across the world.

acting locally, to make change locally and globally; that's the power of the Fairtrade Towns movement. Consumer and community pressure can achieve great things; and has already. But our political leaders and officials still have to do their part, by ending trade-distorting subsidies and giving Southern farmers fair access to the opportunities that will enable them to trade their way to a better future for them and their communities. From all at Fairtrade London - our steering group, borough activists and volunteers.

The state prefe export. Doesnt exist warranty for the producers, and they cant play in the world of the market, cause the support is for the multinational and monopolies. Gosport is a Fairtrade Borough because people here have shown their support for Fairtrade: the school children, the Council and all the shoppers who choose Fairtrade products – we need to know that the people who grow our food receive a fair price which enables them to care for their own children properly –and Fairtrade guarantees that. Now it’s time for governments to follow the lead of ordinary people all over this country and the world and really act to curb speculation on food and make trade fair

Fourth International Fairtrade Towns Conference in Bonn/Germany

    Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

    PRESS RELEASE

    10 Years of Fairtrade Towns

Fourth International Fairtrade Towns Conference in Bonn/Germany

Cologne/Germany, 4 November, 2010: In 2010, the 10-year anniversary celebrations are under way for the international Fairtrade Towns Campaign. And it keeps on kicking up a gear: Over 850 towns in 20 countries have already been awarded Fairtrade Town status, and several hundred are on the waiting list. Since 2009, Germany has been part of the campaign and will host the fourth International Fairtrade Towns Conference this year: On 5-6 November, guests from 18 countries will be discussing the future development of the global campaign in Bonn.

„It is a very exciting time for Germany to be hosting the 4th international Fairtrade Towns Conference. In the UK we have just celebrated our 500th Fairtrade Town and internationally we expect to celebrate 1,000 Fair Trade Towns early in 2011. This is truly an international grassroots movement of people who all care passionately about the poorest producers in the world. We have a long way to go but I know one day we will achieve our aim“, says Bruce Crowther, who founded the movement in 2000 in Great Britain.

During the conference, initiatives from the Czech Republic, Poland and Nigeria, among others, will layout the start of the Fairtrade Towns Campaigns in their countries. There will be presentations on projects implemented in partner communities in countries of the North and South, and opportunities will be discussed how fair trade can be even more included in community-based sourcing and procurement.

    Campaign hugely successful in Germany

The campaign keeps on kicking up gears also in Germany: Since awarding the first Fairtrade Towns title in Germany to the city of Saarbruecken in April 2009, a further 25 towns, municipalities and counties have been awarded this title. A further six are due to be awarded the title in 2010. There is also a long list of applications: Nearly 100 German towns, municipalities and counties have entered the process of applying for the title of Fairtrade Town. „We are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm that the Fairtrade Towns Campaign is receiving. It shows how committed people really are to fair trade and points out the variety of possibilities for communities to transform their commitment to social justice, children’s rights and development into concrete activities”, says Dieter Overath, General Manager of TransFair e.V.

    Highlight: Bonn is Fairtrade Town

As a highlight of the conference, Bonn, former capital city and UNO-city, will be awarded the title Fairtrade Town on 5 November.

    Background:

The Fairtrade Towns Campaign was founded in England by the Fairtrade Foundation. TransFair e.V. initiated this campaign in Germany in January 2009. TransFair was founded in 1992 to support disadvantaged producer groups in developing countries by awarding the Fairtrade label to fairly traded products. Meanwhile, over 30,000 supermarkets, organic shops and world shops in Germany stock around 1,000 different Fairtrade products.

500 mile bike ride to celebrate 500 Fairtrade Towns in the UK

    Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

roadsign-dunscoreThe name of the 500th Fairtrade Town in the UK will be revealed at their declaration on Monday 1 November 2010 and supporters are gearing up to take to their saddles for a 500 mile cycle relay to celebrate. The first cyclists will leave Aberfeldy, Scotland on Saturday 23 October with the journey ending in Cardiff, Wales on the declaration day. Supporters from the 500th Fairtrade Town will connect directly with the celebrations in Cardiff to make their declaration via a video link. A ceremonial parchment will be signed and passed on by the cyclists at celebratory events held in prominent Fairtrade Towns along the way.

Bruce Crowther, founder of Fairtrade Towns says: ‘The 500th Fairtrade Town is a tremendous achievement that should be enjoyed and celebrated, especially by the grassroots campaigners that made it happen. But our campaign is a long journey, fuelled by better understanding and learning. We must therefore always stay focused on the wider picture of trade justice and global poverty, in the knowledge that the final destination will one day be reached.’

The Fairtrade Towns movement has been rapidly growing since Garstang declared itself the world’s first Fairtrade Town at a public meeting in April 2000. Since then thousands of people, passionate about change, have energised their communities to take action. There are presently over 870 Fairtrade Towns in 19 countries worldwide including the cities of London, Paris, Rome, Brussels, Copenhagen and San Francisco. The fourth International Fairtrade Towns Conference will take place in Bonn in November and the 1,000th Fairtrade Town is expected to declare in the first half of 2011.

Harriet Lamb CBE, Executive Director for the Fairtrade Foundation says: ‘Congratulations to everyone in all 500 Towns who have helped put Fairtrade on the map – and on our shop shelves. They are helping tip the balance in favour of smallholders and workers in developing countries, and the achievements of Fairtrade Towns in Britain are a dynamic inspiration to producers, and supporters, right across the world. This latest cycle ride is a great way to highlight the achievements towns have already made. As they pedal against poverty, they are showing that Fairtrade is the way to go. And they will be munching on Fairtrade bananas, fresh fruit, energy bars and chocolates for extra power!’
